Bottle Junction is the premier bottle redemption center located in Buffalo, NY. They provide a hassle free way to return your cans and bottles in exchange for a deposit. Their slogan is: “The fast track to get your nickel back.” Never again will you have to sort or count bottles and cans, use a machine or be tied up at a convenience store. Ray Pabon, from Lockport and Gary Herman, of Corfu, opened their new can and bottle redemption center at 3050 Niagara Falls Blvd. in July 1st 2011, and business is already booming thanks in part to a new state law passed last year creating a deposit on water bottles.
With all the heat,
it’s perhaps no surprise that mountains of water bottles were
among the roughly 40,000 cans and bottle that sat sorted in the new
business on Monday.
bottle recycling center caters to anyone who
cringes at the thought of loading and unloading bags and boxes of
bottles, hauling them into a grocery store and getting their hands
sticky after waiting in line to crunch each, one at a time, into a
traditional bottle return machine.
“We want people to know that when you’re standing at those machines you’re working for the grocery store,” Herman said. That’s because bottle recycling centers at grocery stores, just like Wheatfield’s Bottle Junction, get a fee of between one and three cents per bottle and can from their respective distributors, even though the customer still gets the full 5 cent deposit.
About 30 barrels lining the inside of the rented space, right next to Brydges Chiropractic correlate to a different distributor. None of what the distributors pay Bottle Junction comes out of the deposit consumers expect.
The difference, Herman said, is that at Bottle Junction, they do all the sorting, and there are rarely any lines. They’ll even come and help you unload the sticky cans and bottles and nobody makes you wait while each is being crushed.
“Especially the older people who come in – we go right out there and help them bring them in,” Pabon said.

Best place to return your refundable cans and bottles. The employees are nice and quick at counting. It beats standing at the machines at wegmans for an hour with 500+ pieces when you can have them counted in 5 minutes at the bottle junction. I have seen other customers bring in bags half full of trash and non refundables expecting them to be a garbage and trash disposal business too... It's a deposit refund center not a garbage dump, have some dignity and clean and or sort out your cans and bottles from the trash that you throw in there too. Would you go to wegmans and try to put your red solo cup or paper plate in the bottle return hole? Nope. They are there to count your refundables not sort though your trash. People have to take in to consideration that not all the pieces they bring in have refunds on them, while they are counting they are putting these non refundables in a recycling bin out of courtesy. So if you think they have 'miscounted' you are probably mistaken and should review what types of containers you're trying to get refunds for. Bottles of water from the reservation most likely do not have deposits, some bottles from vending machines do not have deposits too. Most of the employees have told me they count by 4's which makes it really easy to keep count. IE 4, 8, 12, 16, 20. There are always problem customers that try to scam for the extra couple bucks.
I LOVE not having to deal with bottle redemption machines anymore! It is so much faster to go to Bottle Junction! I'm just not sure how accurate the human counting is. I just don't see how they can be 100% accurate with all the distractions in there. However, the convenience of having someone else count my bottles and cans seriously outweighs the cost of them miscounting and me losing some nickels. The reason I'm not giving Bottle Junction a 5-star rating is because while the owners, Ray and Gary, are super friendly, their employees often seem angry and exasperated. There's one woman in particular at the Colvin location who definitely shouldn't be working there (or with the public at all!). I know this is a dirty job, but no one is forcing them to work there (I hope not anyway). I feel bad enough that they have to handle my bags of bottles and cans without them being outwardly miserable about it.
